Whether you know it as the “Hoosier State”, “Crossroads of America” or “Corn Country” there is no shortage of heritage in Indiana.
Apart from the Native Americans, French fur traders were the first to arrive in Indiana. American tribes would trade their furs for goods and tools previously unattainable.
Indiana was heavily involved in the War of 1812, perhaps more than any other upper-midwestern state. The Battle of Tippecanoe, considered to be the catalyst of the war, is the most famous battle to take place in the state. Actions that led to the end of the war gave the U.S. control of the Indiana territory leading to a settlement, followed by statehood in 1816.
Part of the “Railroad Mania” was the formation of the American Railroad Union in Terre Haute in 1893. The first railroads were intended as feeders to water transportation via the Ohio River, Wabash, and Erie Canal, though it soon became evident the railroad could serve a much larger purpose. Over the next two decades the railroad would grow rapidly throughout the state.
The first monument in the U.S. dedicated to the common soldier was the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. This National Historic Landmark dedicated on May 15, 1902, is America’s greatest Civil War monument, and it commemorates the valor of Hoosier veterans who served in all wars prior to WWI. People still come from all over to pay their respects, especially during the holiday season when it is transformed to the “Circle of Lights”.
Constructed in 1909, the racetrack at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was originally built to be a test track for the many local automobile factories. The oval circuit was the first to be called a ‘speedway’ and is the third-oldest permanent automobile racetrack in the world. Today, the speedway hosts some of the world’s most famous motor racing competitions.
