Gibson County was founded on the 1st of April, 1813. The county was given the name of Gibson in honor of Gen. John Gibson, a soldier of the French and Indian and Revolutionary wars. He was also Secretary of the Territory of Indiana from 1800 until the admission of Indiana into the Union as a State, in 1816. In 1852 the Gibson county fair was first held, and has continued to be held annually, making it one of – if not the – oldest running county fair in the world.
