The Oklahoma Legacy Over-Under Shotgun
In its land and its people, Oklahoma is a state of contrast and of the unexpected. The terrain varies from rolling timbered hills of the east, to the treeless high plains that extend from the Panhandle region to the lowlands of the Arkansas River.
Oklahoma is a Choctaw Indian word that means “red people.” It is derived from the words for people (okla) and red (humma). By the time Europeans arrived the land was inhabited by a large number of Native American tribes. They relied heavily on the buffalo for food, shelter, tools, clothing, and more. They lived in tepees that could be easily moved as they followed the giant buffalo herds.
To this day, Oklahoma is home to one of the largest buffalo herds in the country. Along expansive pastures where native grasses sway stands the majestic American bison. At six feet tall and weighing about 1,000 pounds, the massive state animal cuts a striking figure contrasting against the deep blue Oklahoma sky.
Throughout the 19th century, the U.S. government relocated Indian tribes from the southeastern United States to Oklahoma, which was originally called the Indian Territories. At the same time, ranchers in Texas began to move into the area in search of new pasture lands, and the government eventually opened the land to settlement. They created “land runs” in which settlers were allowed to cross the border at a particular hour to claim homesteads. Settlers who broke the law and crossed the border sooner than allowed were called “Sooners,” which eventually became the state’s nickname.
Oklahoma’s impressive agricultural impact spreads far beyond the state line. Ranking fourth in the nation, the Sooner State boasts 78,000 farms. Hardworking farmers and ranchers grow and raise the state’s important commodities, such as hogs, cattle and calves, soybeans, winter wheat, rye, pecans, milk and more.
Oklahoma is revered for its distinguished pride, indomitable character, and unbridled spirit. Whether your family settled here in previous generations, or you’ve sunk your own roots into this very special place, this shotgun has been designed with you in mind.
