Acknowledged as one of the most legendary outlaws, Tom Horn was always a controversial figure in the Old West, even before his untimely death.
Recognized for his intelligence, tracking abilities, and his skills as a sniper, Horn was an interesting man. He served as a scout in the US Army, and he helped capture of the Apache Indian Geronimo. Eventually, he was hired by the Pinkerton Detective Agency to handle cases in Colorado and Wyoming, and later worked for the Swan Land and Cattle Company to hunt and kill cattle thieves. Horn also had a reputation for hunting down other outlaws.
During his time as a bounty hunter, he was supposedly responsible for over 20 deaths, but he was never convicted for any of the murders. He was a fearless and lucky man, but the luck ran out when a 14-year-old boy named Willie Nickell was shot and killed in Wyoming. Accused of killing Nickell, Horn was hanged in Cheyenne on November 20th, 1903. Whether he was guilty or not is still debatable. Nevertheless, Horn’s death marked the end of the cowboy era, and the Old Frontier perished along with him.
