Formed February 15, 1921 Teton County is a region with a vibrant past and rich heritage. Situated along the prominent Teton Range, the territory is home to some of the most pristine and majestic wilderness found anywhere. Blessed with an abundance of wildlife, fish and game, the countryside is a true sportsman’s paradise, providing endless beauty and recreation for residents and visitors alike.
Prior to the 1800’s Native Americans were the only regular inhabitants of the valley. The tribes had used this land for thousands of years, and their familiarity with the trails and seasonal changes made entrance and exit routine.
By the mid-1880s the region became a prime destination for fur trappers and explorers, with many famous mountain men venturing through the Jackson Hole area. These mountain men are responsible for many of the names in the valley including Bridger, Jedediah Smith, and Sublette. David “Davey” Jackson gave his name to the valley after a winter spent on the shores of Jackson Lake.
The first settlers came on horseback following established fur trapping routes up the Green River. These early settlers offered meals, lodging and outfitting services to early visitors. People from all over soon populated the valley, forming a small rustic community that would continue to grow to present day. Whether your family settled here in previous centuries, or you’ve sunk your own roots into this very special place, Teton County is a region with a proud heritage and lasting legacy!
