During the Civil War Hanover County was a frequent battlefield as Union troops commanded by various generals attempted to fight their way to Richmond through the Confederate army commanded by Gen. Robert E. Lee. The Battle of Gaines Mill near Cold Harbor was one of the biggest battles of the Civil War and represented Gen. Robert E. Lee’s first victory.
