Florida 175th Anniversary Rifle!
Florida became the twenty-seventh state to join the Union on March 3, 1845. From the earliest days of U.S. territorial expansion to the Space and Nuclear Age, Florida’s past spans a rich and vibrant 175 years. Since the arrival of the earliest Spanish explorers in 1513, the territory has witnessed periods of colonization, immigration, war, and settlement. During the first half of the 1800s, U.S. troops waged war with the region’s Native American population. Seminoles, recognized for their fighting abilities, won the respect of U.S. soldiers for their bravery, fortitude, and ability to adapt to changing circumstances throughout the Seminole Wars.
Before Andrew Jackson became president, he ventured to Florida to establish a new territorial government on behalf of the United States. After Florida became a U.S. Territory in 1821, Secretary of State John Quincy Adams appointed Jackson its military governor. What the U.S. inherited was a wilderness sparsely dotted with settlements of native Indian people, African Americans, and Spaniards.
During the Civil War, Florida was the third state to secede from the Union and join the confederacy. The territory was not ravaged as several other southern states were, and while Union forces occupied many coastal towns and forts, the interior of the state remained in Confederate hands. Ultimately, the South was defeated, and federal troops occupied Tallahassee on May 10, 1865.
Beginning in the late 19th century, residents of Northern states flocked to Florida to escape harsh winters. Tourism became Florida’s leading industry and remains so today, attracting millions of visitors annually. Florida is also known for its oranges and grapefruit, and some 80 percent of America’s citrus is grown here. To this day, ‘The Sunshine State” is revered for its distinguished pride, indomitable character, and enduring spirit. With a sovereign will and unwavering belief, Floridians will forever remain vigilant, honor their past and continue their legacy!
