The North American Bison Rifle
Bison once roamed the U.S. grasslands and continue to be an enduring symbol of freedom and the American West. While the landscape has changed in modern times, the respect for this majestic mammal has remained.
Unique to North America, bison are the continent’s largest mammal, and are among the most dangerous wildlife to encounter. Described as having a wild and ungovernable temper. They can sprint three times faster than humans, and they’re known to charge, throw or gore humans when threatened. This agility and speed, combined with their great size and weight, makes bison herds difficult to confine, as they can easily escape or destroy most fencing systems, including most razor wire.
Long before the first Europeans arrived, Native Americans hunted bison liberally. Fundamental to tribal culture and survival, they used every part of the bison for food, clothing, shelter, and tools. Among many tribes, the bison is considered a sacred animal and religious symbol, often used in ceremonies and rituals.
The National Bison Legacy Act was signed into law in 2016, making bison the USA’s national mammal. Bison have long been an emblem representing the country’s frontier roots, gracing the U.S. Department of the Interior seal, the National Park Service Arrowhead logo, and at one time, the back of the USA’s five-cent coin, the nickel.
