The Virginia Legacy Over-Under Shotgun
In 1606, King James I granted a charter to a new venture, the Virginia Company, to form a settlement in North America. On May 14, 1607, the group of roughly 100 members founded the first permanent English settlement in North America on the banks of the James River and named it Jamestown. Today, Jamestown is one of three locations composing the Historic Triangle of Colonial Virginia.
Patrick Henry was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and the first governor of Virginia. A prominent figure in the American Revolution his rousing speeches fired up America’s fight for independence. In March of 1775 the Second Virginia Convention met in Richmond to discuss the state’s strategy against the British. It was here that Patrick Henry delivered his most famous speech. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and five of the six other Virginians who would later sign the Declaration of Independence were in attendance that day. Historians say that Henry’s “Liberty or Death” speech helped convince those in attendance to begin preparing Virginia troops for war against Great Britain.
Arlington officially became a national cemetery on June 15, 1864, just a month following the first military burial on site. The original cemetery was 200 acres and has since grown to 639 acres. The first official “Decoration Day,” later renamed Memorial Day, was held at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868. This tradition continues today and is one reason why Arlington transformed from being one of many national cemeteries into the premier national military cemetery.
In March 1926, soldiers from nearby Fort Myer were first assigned to guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The guards, present only during daylight hours, discouraged visitors from climbing or stepping on the Tomb. In 1937, the guards became a 24/7 presence, always standing watch over the Unknown Soldier.
