Attracted to the scenic beauty and pure environment of the Rocky Mountains, Nathan Meeker ventured to the Colorado Territory in search of a new location from which to raise a town. Meeker along with Horace Greeley who urged “young men to head west” established a colony of Protestants with high moral standards, a strong work ethic and conservative values. Founded October 1869, the settlers established their community based on the principles of Agriculture, Irrigation, Education, Temperance, Cooperation, Family Values, and Faith. The ditches were dug early and colonist farmers defended their water rights vigilantly, enacting the “First in Time, First in Right” Water Doctrine, thus laying the foundation for the town to prosper and thrive well into the future.
