Formed March 9, 1771 picturesque Bedford County is a region with a vibrant past and rich heritage. Named in honor of Fort Bedford, the territory has witnessed periods of colonization, emigration, war, and settlement. In 1758, Fort Bedford was constructed during the French and Indian War. The fort was one of a string of forts and blockhouses designed to protect British supply lines on the Forbes Road.
In the aftermath of the American Revolution, Old Bedford County was reduced from its original boundaries and the area quickly increased in population. The land with its lush farmland and woodland tracts became a prime destination for settlement. Within a lifetime, Fort Bedford and the surrounding area grew as a transportation and lodging center.
In 1794, George Washington arrived in response to one of the Country’s first tax crisis, the infamous Whiskey Rebellion. Small farmers of the backcountry distilled whiskey, which was easier to transport and sell than the grain that was its source. It was an informal currency, a means of livelihood, and an enlivener of a harsh existence. The distillers resisted the tax by attacking, and often tarring and feathering federal revenue officers who attempted to collect it. The rebellion was the first opportunity for the newly formed U.S. government to establish federal authority by military means in American history.
