As the southern part of the former Dakota Territory, South Dakota became a state on November 2, 1889. Named after the Lakota and Dakota Sioux, South Dakota is a territory that has been inhabited by humans for thousands of years. The Sioux were a nomadic people who lived in teepees and followed the bison herds. The discovery of gold in the Black Hills led to a massive increase of miners and the influx of settlers led to clashes with the tribes. Encroaching miners and settlers triggered several Indian wars, ending with the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890.
South Dakota is renowned for its tradition of pheasant hunting, and rightfully so, the state boasts the most robust pheasant population in the world. With rolling hills and endless prairies, South Dakota is home to the best pheasant hunting in the country. With ample public land and countless hunting opportunities, hunters have access to some of the greatest spots to chase birds and work their dogs. Whether you live here or are here for the hunt, you will never forget that South Dakota is where you hunt the greatest land, live the greatest traditions, and make the greatest memories.
Today, a major part of South Dakota’s economy is fueled by tourism–visitors flock to the state to see Mt. Rushmore, featuring iconic portraits of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Surrounded by the beauty of the Black Hills, these figures tell the story of the birth, growth, development and preservation of this country. From the history of the first inhabitants to the diversity of America today, Mount Rushmore brings visitors face to face with the rich heritage we all share.
