Named for the Lackawanna River, Lackawanna County was established August 13, 1878, marking it as Pennsylvania’s last and final county, and the 67th created. Known as a center of mining and industry, Lackawanna emerged from a demand in iron production and anthracite coal mining. Coal, steel and railroads played huge roles in the development of late 19th and early 20th Century America and Lackawanna County happened to manufacture all three. With the industrial boom in full swing, this led to a very prosperous time in Northeast Pennsylvania. Known for its close-knit communities, strong work ethic and conservative values, Lackawanna County is a region with a rich heritage and proud legacy!
