The Colfax County Heritage Rifle
The organization of Colfax County came 56 years after the first documented report of white men traveling through the Platte River Valley. In the coming years an increasing number of traders, trappers, gold miners, and Mormon settlers would pass through the area. Founded in 1869, Colfax County was established as part of the division of Platte County into three parts. With the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad, Schuyler Station was established and at the time the site was selected as county seat, the railroad was the sole owner of the property.
As Schuyler and the surrounding areas began to develop, so too did the territory’s farming and agricultural base. As farmlands grew so too did the economy. Texas cattle being driven north would be loaded onto trains and with this, Schuyler became Nebraska’s first “cow town” with many finding employment as cattleman or in the beef processing industry. Known for its close-knit communities, strong work ethic and conservative values, it holds true that Colfax County is a region with a rich heritage and a lasting legacy!
