Iwo Jima 75th Anniversary Pistol
“Among the Americans who served on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue.” ~ Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz
The Battle of Iwo Jima was an epic military campaign between U.S. Marines and the Imperial Army of Japan. The American invasion, designated Operation Detachment, had the goal of capturing the entire island, including the three Japanese-controlled airfields.
On February 19th, 1945, U.S. Marines made an amphibious landing on the beaches of Iwo Jima. Immediately met with conflict and hostility, the ensuing battle lasted 5 weeks, and involved some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the Pacific War during World War II. Just four days into the fighting, U.S. Marines captured Mount Suribachi, famously raising the American flag at the summit. In total, some 70,000 U.S. Marines stormed the beaches and overwhelmed the Imperial Japanese forces, thus assuring American victory.
