We are excited to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Scott County! Formed in 1820, Scott County is a region with a vibrant past and rich heritage. Named for Gen. Charles Scott (Colonel of the Militia during the War of 1812) the territory was originally settled by the tribes of the Sioux, Cherokee, and Iroquois, but would eventually become a destination for settlers and tradesmen headed farther into the interior.
Thriving industries gave rise to further development, with workers in the timber trade producing materials for ship building along with millions of barrel stavs before the large trees were depleted. Bolstered by the arrival of the railroad, food canning would become a major industry in the region, developing rapidly into a national supplier of canned foods.
Scott County endured events such as the infamous “Morgan’s Raid” during the Civil War, where hundreds of Confederate soldiers marched through the territory. The county was also the site of one of the first train robberies by the notorious Reno Brothers Gang, leaving their mark on the community for years to come. No matter where you are from in Scott County, it holds true that this is a region rich in heritage and American pride!
